Singer sewing machines come in a variety of types, from hand and treadle models, top load and front load and also with the long bullet shuttles.

The problems encountered with them are similar to other brands, so check for the basics first

  • Use suitable needle type and size for fabric being sewn and that it is sharp and not bent, and inserted correctly


  • The threads are of good quality as cheaper threads give off more lint and dust with more knots and slubs and that the threading path for bobbin and to needle is correct


  • Tension setting as indicated in your user manual


  • Don’t forget to lower your presser foot before starting to sew


  • Clean regularly in bobbin area to stop threads snagging or upsetting tensions


  • Use correct presser foot for stitch selected

If any of the troubleshooting tips do not help to sort out any problems, it is always better to take the machine in for professional inspection and repair, especially if it is in regards to timing or tensions.

Continuing to use your machine may lead to more wear and tear, possibly making the machine totally inoperable.
